Subdomains
A subdomain allows you to create separate host names for your mail servers, which is usually done when you need to load-balance your e-mail traffic, set up mail servers in different geographic locations, or separately brand your e-mail for different divisions of a company.
For example, the company Jim's Bikes, at www.jimsbikes.com, creates mail servers for its U.S. factory (usa.jimsbikes.com) and its European factory (europe.jimsbikes.com). These subdomains also affect the actual e-mail addresses for company employees, so Jim's e-mail address is jim@usa.jimsbikes.com <mailto:jim@usa.jimsbikes.com> because his office is in the U.S. factory.
When creating subdomains:
- You must also designate the MX record
- DNS updates will take up to 2 hours to take effect (updates may resolve more quickly at some locations than others because many name servers on the Internet retrieve updates at different times).
To create a new subdomain
- Follow instructions for accessing DNS Manager – Advanced Tools to view the DNS Manager Settings page
- On the Edit Domain Name Server page, under the Mail Servers: MX Records section, click Add Subdomain next to the domain name
- On the Edit Subdomains page, enter the new subdomain name in the Domain/Subdomain text box (subdomains must have MX records associated with them)
- Enter the mail server names in the Mail Server text box
- Enter the associated priority level in the Priority text box
